I said, 'Auf Wiedersehen' – 85 years since the Kindertransport to Britain
A special exhibition in the German Bundestag marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day
The unique initiative to save Jewish children and young people from National Socialist persecution is the focus of the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung special exhibition I said, ‚Auf Wiedersehen‘. The exhibition will be on show in the German Bundestag and runs from 31.01.24 until 23.02.24. 2024 marks the 85th anniversary of the start of the Kindertransport, which is still considered until today one of the most ambitious campaigns to save Jewish and non Aryan children from the Nazi dictatorship.
The exhibition is curated and directed by Ruth Ur, Managing Director of the Friends of Yad Vashem. It presents five different aspects of the history of this unique rescue project in five themed stations based on five family stories. The exhibition is presented as a series of oversized letters extending across the atrium of the Paul-Löbe Haus entrance.
The Kindertransport from Germany to England enabled more than 10,000 Jewish children to escape the Nazi persecution before the start of the war. The children and young people were saved from the Holocaust; in most cases, their parents remained behind. Five original documents, four from the Vienna Holocaust Library and one from the International Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem, tell the unique story of this rescue initiative. The letters, and the stories behind them, make the tragedy of separation and loss palpable and also pay tribute to the lives that were saved.
